Dear Climate Advocates:
Hurricane Harvey, western wildfires and record heat, massive deadly flooding in south Asia – the fight against climate change and for a sustainable future has never been more urgent. It is critical to safeguard our people and our property from the dangers of future climate disasters.
The good news is we have climate solutions that work – they create good climate jobs, grow businesses, save consumers money, help farmers, and improve our health.
We also have great opportunities to get more informed and more involved in promoting a healthy, prosperous and sustainable future. Encourage your friends, family, and neighbors to get involved and stay involved. Together, we can take the climate action we so urgently need for our future. Here are six upcoming action items:
1. O’Malley, Merkley Visit Iowa Sept. 9 and 10 – Two national leaders will be visiting Iowa this week. Former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley will be visiting Davenport, Maquoketa, Dubuque, and North Liberty to support Democratic events on Sept. 9 and 10. U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon will be speaking at the Progress Iowa Corn Feed in Des Moines on Sept. 10. This is a great chance to hear from and speak with these national leaders about the urgent need for climate action.

2. Climate Reality Training in Pittsburgh (Application Deadline Sept. 12) – The Climate Reality Project is holding its next training October 17-19 in Pittsburgh, where Mayor Bill Peduto is fighting back against Trump for pulling out of the Paris Agreement. 3. Iowa Interfaith Power & Light (Events Sept. 10, 11, 24, and Oct. 8) – Iowa Interfaith Power & Light has “food, faith, and climate” programs in Grundy Center (Sept. 10) and Washington (Oct. 8), along with presentations on climate justice in West Branch (Sept. 11) and Dubuque (Sept. 24). 4. Nebraska Elders for the Earth, Oct. 1-4 – Elders for the Earth is holding a retreat October 1-4 in Mahoney State Park between Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska, primarily for people over age 50 who would like to be more informed and more involved in the climate action movement. 5. Comment to Save Fuel Economy Standards by Oct. 5 – The EPA is conducting what it calls a “midterm evaluation” of fuel economy standards adopting under the Obama Administration.
