Citizens for a Healthy Iowa is paying close attention to Iowa’s 2018 gubernatorial candidates and their position on funding the Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund.
In 2010, 63% of Iowans voted for a constitutional amendment to create the Trust Fund. The constitution now states that three-eighths of one-cent of the revenue from the next sales tax increase will forever be allocated to the Trust Fund, to be used to improve our water quality, protect our soil, enhance wildlife habitat, and increase outdoor recreation opportunities across Iowa.
Since 2010, Iowa’s politicians – forever loyal to the Iowa Farm Bureau and their anti-environmental policies – have all but forgotten about the Trust Fund, as well as Iowa’s worsening water quality and the risk to our safe drinking water as a result.
Seven years of listening to politicians say “It’s not the right time to fund the Trust Fund” is far too long. We want answers. We want a governor who will stand up against the Farm Bureau and support a sustainable funding source, like the Trust Fund, to protect and preserve our safe drinking water and other natural resources.
Now, tell them how YOU feel.
Do you think Iowa’s candidates for governor should publicly state a position on funding the Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund?
