Citizens for Healthy Iowa wonders if we are being fooled

Are Iowans being fooled?

Iowa’s safe drinking water has been at risk for years, and that risk just increased because Iowa’s elected leaders, candidates, and the Iowa DNR have taken positions recently that downplay the facts and mislead Iowans on the true status of our worsening water quality:

  • The DNR recently reported 86% fewer Iowa beach advisories this year. This should be good news, except that 86% seems extremely high, making us and other environmental groups skeptical. (Fewer Iowa beach advisories issued this year)
  • The DNR adopted a new bacteria standard that will not reflect spikes in water quality, and therefore will not adequately protect our public health. (DNR rule change could endanger Iowans’ health ) and (DNR proposal is attempt to lower Iowa water quality standards)
  • Potential candidates to replace Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey show little interest in truly addressing Iowa’s water quality crisis outside of voluntary measures. One possible candidate, Dan Zumbach (R-Ryan), said when asked about Iowa’s long list of more than 700 impaired waterways, “The word ‘impaired’ just has nothing to do with pollution. Impaired can mean too clean, impaired can mean too straight, impaired can mean too many trees.” (New ag secretary unlikely to make waves on water quality )
  • Due to lack of appropriate rules, regulations and staffing at the DNR, it was discovered that Iowa has about 5,000 more pig confinements and cattle lots across the state (nearly 50 percent more) than originally believed. (Iowa uses satellites to uncover 5,000 previously undetected animal confinements)

It’s wrong and irresponsible to mislead Iowans with words and actions that affect our safe drinking water and public health. We’re fighting back in 2018 against the people who are failing Iowans, our safe drinking water, and our public health!
